4 Things to Look for in a Restaurant Remodeling Contractor

August 20, 2018

Restaurant

Any restaurateur knows that the restaurant world is tricky business. Customers demand top quality at rock bottom prices, hours are long, rent is high, and profit margins are thin; if you want to come out on top, then you have to make thoughtful decisions about how to better your restaurant. The reality that diners eat with their eyes does not only apply to the food that you serve them but also the decor and styling of your restaurant. Poorly thought out floor plans, unattractive design, and underutilized space can leave guests with a poor perception of your restaurant, and they may not give you a second visit. You also need to make sure that your kitchen is well designed so that it can be fully functional when you end up slammed with a rush. At Green Frog Construction, we understand how difficult it can be to put your faith in a contractor to remodel your restaurant and want to offer you some tips on how to find the best contractor for your job.

Experience Matters

No matter how good the blueprints or design mockups are, if you don’t choose an experienced contractor, then you may be exposing yourself to some unneeded stress. You want your job to be on time, on the budget, and to have everything imagined delivered. When you are working with experienced contractors, they can easily integrate your vision and know all the tricks to achieve certain looks in the easiest and most cost-effective way. Experienced contractors may sometimes have a higher bid, but they come with the guarantee of all of their past work and successes and a wealth of knowledge that can help you.

Saving Money isn’t Everything

When you get bids or quotes in for your redesign, it can be tempting to go with the lowest bid. There is a difference between a low bid due to the volume of work and a strong contractor base such as with GreenFrog, vs. a smaller bid from smaller General Contractors who are simply trying to win the job, but haven’t really done their homework – this can lead to headaches and many unknown costs later. While you may be pleased with your bargain at first, chances are to achieve this low price some corner is being cut, whether that is materials, labour, or work quality. While you do not have to go with the highest bid to get great quality work, you should look at the range of prices and decide what is reasonable then go with the best design and price for you.

Design is Key

This does go partially back to experience, in that an experienced contractor will know what works and what does not, but you need to keep design at the forefront of your mind when creating your new space. There needs to be adequate traffic flow in your restaurant, a reasonable waiting area, and you need to take accessibility into account so that you keep to your local accessibility acts and guidelines.

Set the Mood

Lighting a restaurant can be tricky. Depending on the type of restaurant you have, the ambience you want, and your windows, you will have different lighting needs than other restaurateurs. Talk to a contractor about their experience with lighting and see if they do it themselves or have an electrician they work closely with who can handle the task.
